How to Prep for a Spray Tan: Expert Tips from a Professional Tanner
Zoe KleinIf you're prepping for a spray tan, there are a few things you need to know to get that flawless, even glow that lasts.
How Long Will My Tan Last?
This is the question I get asked the most - and the truth is, it depends on how well you prepare your skin.
The better your skin is prepped, the longer your tan will last and the more evenly it will fade.
Think of tanning like painting - if the canvas isn’t smooth, the end result won’t be perfect.
That’s why proper exfoliation and hydration make all the difference.
Start Prepping Early
A lot of people think exfoliating once and moisturising a few days before their appointment is enough… but it’s not!
To get your best results, start prepping at least a couple of weeks before your tan.
Here’s how:
-
Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and old tan residue.
-
Moisturise daily so your skin stays soft and hydrated.
Healthy, hydrated skin holds tan better and helps it fade evenly — no patchiness, no streaks.
Avoid Sun Damage Before Tanning
This one’s a biggie. I can’t tell you how many times someone’s come in with sunburn or peeling skin, hoping I can “fix” the tan lines. Unfortunately, once the skin’s damaged, your tan won’t look smooth — it’ll grab unevenly and fade in patches.
So in the days leading up to your tan:
-
Avoid excessive sun exposure
-
Wear long sleeves, pants, and a hat when outdoors
-
Always apply SPF 30+ every two hours if you’re in the sun between 11am and 3pm
Your skin is the body’s largest organ — you only get one, so take care of it!
