When to Shave or Wax Before Tanning (and Whether You Can Shave After)

Zoe Klein

Getting a flawless, streak-free tan starts with good prep. One of the most common questions I get is when to shave or wax before tanning, and whether it’s safe to shave after applying self-tan. Let’s settle it once and for all.

The Golden Rule: Shave or Wax 24 to 48 Hours Before Tanning

Always shave or wax at least 24 to 48 hours before applying your tan. This gives your skin time to recover, your pores time to settle, and your natural oils time to rebalance.

When you shave or wax, your pores are temporarily more open. Applying self-tan too soon can cause the solution to settle into those follicles, creating small brown dots on your legs often called strawberry legs.

Your pores usually take about 12 to 24 hours to calm down and appear closed again. Giving your skin that full day ensures your tan applies evenly and looks smooth.

Can You Shave Right Before You Tan?

If you are in a rush and need to shave the same day, you can do it carefully with a few key steps.

  1. Use cold water after shaving. Hot water makes pores appear larger, while cold water helps tighten the skin and reduce the chance of tan settling into those areas.

  2. Avoid oily shaving products. Choose a gentle, oil-free formula so your tan can stick properly.

  3. Wait at least a few hours before tanning. This gives your skin time to settle and reduces the risk of brown dots.

If you have sensitive skin, I always recommend giving it the full 24 hours before tanning.

Waxing Before a Tan

Waxing removes hair from the root, which means your skin needs a little longer to recover. The best time to tan after waxing is 48 hours later. This allows the follicles to close and helps prevent patchiness or uneven absorption.

A light exfoliation the day after waxing removes any leftover residue, ensuring a smooth surface for your self-tan.

Can You Shave After a Tan?

Yes, you can shave after tanning, but it must be done gently to avoid stripping away your colour. Shaving acts like exfoliation, so being gentle is key.

Here is how to do it correctly:

  • Wait 8 to 24 hours after tanning before shaving.

  • Use a fresh razor and glide it lightly across the skin.

  • Avoid shaving foams that contain oils or alcohol. Use water or a gentle, oil-free body wash instead.

  • After shaving, pat dry and apply a hydrating, oil-free moisturiser to help your glow last longer.
